Focus Review on Epson scanners, the choice for Photography professionals.

June 2017

If you search reviews on the Epson V700, now the V800 it's hard to find a bad one. Same for the lower cost Epson Perfection V550 photo scanner (documents too) which is similar. For heavy duty work loads consider Epson V800 film / photo scanner.

The new Epson V800 scanner it's basically the same as the V700 it starts up faster as the lamps don't need to warm up now they are LED. The box is now plain brown rather than the nicely printed one the V700 came in! People stop complaining about the packaging! That's how we get them and it does the job to protect the scanner, sure we've seen nicer packaging but not a better scanner in that price range than the V800.

Buy Epson V550

If you're after a good low cost scanner that's still uses "CCD" sensors consider the new Epson scanner range.

Epson Perfection V550 vs canon 9000f, vs v600, vs v700 review.

The best scanners in the world, the best TV cameras etc. all use CCD sensors. Cheap fax machines use CIS sensors (LIDE) along with some low cost scanners. The lower cost canon scanner use the cheaper "CIS" sensors, V700 (last model) along with the Epson V800 use "CCD".

Epson V550  Epson V800

Epson V550 and V800 flatbed CCD scanners

CCD is simply the best, it has a better depth of field too. That means you can scan items like watch faces in 3D. The Epson V550 photo scanner is right in the middle of Epson's scanner range and it's their best seller in the class. CCDs are also used in cameras that need quality HD images with a high pixel count and good low  light sensitivity.

CCD sensors are Low Noise so the images are more natural than other types of image sensors, including CMOS (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor).

The main reason manufactures use alternatives to CCD is to lower their production cost. As you'll see below all the best cameras are CCD and a scanner is basically a camera sensor that moves along a scanning bed taking pictures line by line.

CCD use in astronomy

Due to the high quantum efficiencies of CCDs, linearity of their outputs (one count for one photon of light), ease of use compared to photographic plates, and a variety of other reasons, CCDs were very rapidly adopted by astronomers for nearly all UV-to-infrared applications.   -en.wikipedia.org

astronomy-ccd

"CCD Imaging is the fastest growing segment in the hobby of amateur astronomy today.  Most amateur astronomers have at least dabbled with imaging in one way or another.  A large percentage of observers love it so much that imaging has all but replaced visual observations when they get out under the stars."  -Optcorp

Back to Scanners

Another important thing to consider is the OPTICAL DPI forget all about the interpolated DPI for most uses. Interpolation as the name suggests is simply software adding (mathematically guessed) dots between the real dots or pixels. So once you scan above the H or Z optical DPI you're using the scanners firmware inbuilt interpolation to fill in the blanks.

The scanners Vertical DPI is a function of the stepping motor, the finer it can move the sensor the higher the resolution. The Horizontal DPI is a function of the number of pixels on the sensor, normally the lower figure of the two, for example 4800 x 9600 DPI where 4800 is the actual CCD.

To scan to internet pages 150-300 DPI is more than enough unless enlarging, you'll end up resizing down to the equivalent of around 75 DPI (or screen resolution) if 1:1 zoom is what you're after. For personal www pages, Facebook etc. (if you have no film requirements) save money with a lower cost scanner.

To enlarge from 6 X 4 to A4 300 DPI is OK and to go to A3 from a normal photo 1200 DPI is fine.

You need higher DPI for 35mm film to A4, you can imagine the scale so 4800 DPI will do the job. All DPI figures quoted for enlargement are optical.

Scan Depth (Depth of field) for 3D items.

  • Note that not all films & photos are perfectly flat so depth of scan can help there also.

Converting / digitising a lot of 35mm or medium format film? Pay the extra for the Epson V800 film / photo scanner and get it done quickly.

You can choose a higher DPI and get more dots per inch for your print when scanning however you can also do this with most photo editing programs like Adobe Photoshop after you've scanned the file.
